It’s been awhile since I had the time to sit down and give an update on all of the goings on around Mind Cure recently, but it’s certainly not because there hasn’t been anything to write about. I have been neck deep in projects that have been taking up all my time (I was going to say free time, but I’m not really sure what that is at the moment).
In big news, Mind Cure has officially made it past 3 years, June 13th was the official day, and I would like to thank everyone who has kept the store afloat over these last 157 weeks – that’s you by the way. Over the last year I have really tried to expand what the store does as an institution by focusing on projects beyond buying, stocking and selling records and putting a lot of attention into releasing and re-releasing Pittsburgh music. I made the decision to merge my record releasing efforts with the store and put my label, Dear Skull Records, to bed with it’s final release this February after 6 years of releasing records and revived the dormant Mind Cure Records label with the LP issue of Mind Cure #1, Real Enemy.
The support and enthusiasm that the Real Enemy release got was beyond my greatest expectations, so once again thanks for the support. While Dear Skull focused on current music happening in Pittsburgh, Mind Cure is about preserving and reviving music created in or around the three rivers on the vinyl format. Along with these records there are also documentary video and writing projects in the works that focus on the Punk and Hardcore scenes, people and places that spawned Mind Cure records in 1983. The first segment of these long term project will debut next week, so stay tuned for further announcements. There are 2 more LP issues of Mind Cure cassettes due out this year from Savage Amused and The Battered Citizens which I am thrilled to be working on and several other projects simmering on the back burner. When I talked about refocusing my energies on these projects there were people who were disappointed that I was not going to be putting effort into music that is happening today, and rightfully so. After thinking about it I realized that I just didn’t have the energy to work on new and reissued LPs without burning myself out, but I felt like it was time to tackle a project that I have wanted to do for a long time – a single of the month for a year.
These singles, which will be released monthly during Mind Cure’s fourth year, are dedicated to Pittsburgh bands who are writing, playing and recording music today. Each 45rpm record has an original track on the A side and a cover song of the bands choice on the B side. They are limited to 300 copies each and are all housed in Mind Cure Company sleeves, hand stamped with the band name, month and year.
These will be made available at Mind Cure on the last Saturday of the month. They will be sold here on a first come first served basis. Beginning the following week – on Monday – remaining copies will be available for mail order, offered to other stores in Pittsburgh and offered to distributors. There will be a limited number of records set aside to make complete sets which will be housed in a limited box set and made available at the end of the year. The very same box will available for purchase at the end of the year to people who have bought all 12 records so that you can put your complete set together yourself. These records and the box are BEING SOLD AT COST. The aim of this project is to support local music and to thank you, the record buyer, for supporting them. There is no predatory practice of raising or inflating prices or creating a buying frenzy I want to thank you and reward you for supporting this project not punish you.
Each month there will also be a short video about each band put up online so that maybe you can learn about a group that you have never heard or maybe just see your friends on youtube (for a reason other than seeing them set themselves on fire while drinking a flaming dr pepper shot), see who they are and maybe go and check them out live.
This project kicks off on the 29th of this month, just over a week away with the release of the first single from Pittsburgh’s Zeitgeist. We will also be celebrating at the shop with some food and refreshments so come by and say hey. Check back here for more information about each of the releases and to check out the band videos.
Once again, thanks for making this possible and keeping Mind Cure’s doors open.
