Hey folks! We hope that you had a Happy New Year and are ready to kick off your February the right way with some new records!

We are putting out a TON of great used records this weekend: There are a lot of really high quality LPs and 7ins hitting the bins for your browsing pleasure: Punk, Hardcore, Psych, Jazz, Classic Rock, Soul, Funk, International, Reggae and a whole lot more. This is a not to be missed weekend at Mind Cure so make sure you stop on down!

Also, we are selling tickets for the Cut Hands Show happening at the Shop on February 21st, so make sure you snap one up before the show an save yourself $2 at the door. if you are unfamiliar with Cut Hands it is the new moniker of William Bennett of Whitehouse fame, this will surely be a not-to-be-missed show!

Essential New Releases from Mississippi Records

Hey Folks! Just in time for Christmas, a box full of amazing new releases and reissues has shown up from Mississippi records! First off there is a new collection of recordings from the Alan Lomax archives of the Georgia Sea Island Singers, these predominantly accapella recordings range from somber and haunting to raucous and foot stomping at the drop of a hat. They are not to be missed. This LP also features 3 previously unreleased recordings from the Lomax sessions.

Also in stock is an LP collection of Blues and Spirituals from Eddie Lee Jones & Family, “Yonder Go That Old Black Dog,” a new LP and 7in of guitar playing from Takamba from Ali Ag Amoumine and a new 7in from un-stoppable rockers – Pierced Arrows.

The real meat of this order for me though is the LP version of the Music from Saharan Cellphones compilation. If you have heard these recordings before and know the story than you already know that you needed this yesterday. If not here is the official label hype up:

A compilation of the most popular music circulating the Sahara desert on the unofficial network of cellphones — where mp3s are stored, played, and traded in very literal peer to peer bluetooth transfers. The contemporary West African sound from the new school of DIY production with little or no commercial release outside of their locales, from spaced out Tuareg Autotune, Ivorian Club Jams, Mauritanian Synth, and Malian Hip Hop electro. Collected from memory cards by and released on cassette, the vinyl comes after a years plus of tracking down the composers.

And here is some of the actual music just to drive home how amazing these recordings are:

In the same vein is the Mdou Moctar – Tahoultine / Gulls Remix 7.” Here is the official label hype:

Mdou Moctar is a Tuareg guitarist from Niger, but his anthem “Tahoultine” is unlike anything from the desert — a spaced out Autotuned jam, one of the first of its kind, immensely popular on the unofficial mp3 network across West Africa. Collected by Christopher Kirkley from cellphone memory cards in 2009 and featured on the cassette/LP “Music From Saharan Cellphones”, Mdou’s track is one of the highlights of the compilation. On the b-side is Portland, Oregon
electronic musician Gulls with a bass heavy futuristic remix of “Tahoultine”. The remix is a selection from the Boomarm Nation project “Music For Saharan Cellphones” where the source material was remixed and reinterpreted by musicians and producers from around the world –and sent back to Mali on microSD memory cards.

Mind Cure Customer Appreciation Day/Unicorn Mountain Donation Day!

Hey Folks, come out next Thursday – December 15th – from 5pm-8pm for the Mind Cure Holiday Customer Appreciation day! There will be beer and food as well as some specials. Also, in the spirit of giving 10% of all sales on Thursday will be donated to Unicorn Mountain to help cover their printing costs. If you are unfamiliar with Unicorn Mountain check them out and pick up on of their AMAZING new anthologies. Dischord New Releases and Restocks

Just got in a nice big order from Dischord! After selling out once again, we were able to get more copies of the Void “Sessions 1981-83″ LP, as well as the new Evens 7in. Also in the order are restocks of Fugazi, Minor Threat, Nation of Ulysses, Lungfish and all the other Dischord artists that you know and love. One record that I am particularly happy to have back in stock is the Teen Idles “Anniversary (demos)” 7in, which has been a personal favorite for years.

Also in the order are really nice remastered LPs of the Nirvana and Sonic Youth catalog.

As an early warning, Mind Cure will be closing early on Wednesday, November 23rd and will be closed all day on Thursday, November 24th. We will reopen, stuffed to the gills with records on Friday. Make sure that you stop down on Saturday for American Expresses’ Small business Saturday too!

Void Sessions, Throbbing Gristle, Taj Mahal Travelers and More!

Hey Folks! Happy Friday!

There are TONS of great records in the store so read on: After selling out of the first pressing lightin’ fast the absolutely essential Void “Sessions 1981-83″ LP is back in the shop. If you haven’t picked up one of these yet you are seriously missing out, and need to remedy this situation immediately! Also in stock are Throbbing Gristle LP reissues of “Second Annual Report” and “20 Jazz Funk Greats,” as well as The Taj Mahal Travelers “Live” LP. Also, due in before the end of the day today is a Numero order which not only includes copies of the newest Eccentric Soul comp – The Nickle and Penny Labels – The 5LP Boddie Recording Company box set, but also copies of the single from the pre-Alice Cooper Band, The Spiders.

Due in over the next couple of days are orders from Iron Lung – including copies of Total Control ‘Henge Beat’ – and Rerun records – which is filled with some hot-off-the-press punk reissues including the Manic Depressives/0:30 Second Flash split LP and The Gruberger Brothers ‘Greetings from Reading PA” LP.

There are tons of great used LPs hitting the bins daily, so make sure that you stop on down today!

Mississippi, Last Laugh and Sublime Frequencies New Releases and More!

It’s been a little while since we did an update, and a there have been a ton of great new and used records coming in the shop since then. I bought some really nice collections over the last week and there are a lot of high quality used LPs hitting the shelves everyday this week, so make sure you stop down!

First off there are a handful of stellar blues and soul reissues from Mississippi Records including a 2LP Blind Willie Johnson collection, another amazing compilation of raw gospel – “Last Time Around” – and two singles from Portland’s own Ural Thomas. All of these releases are nothing short of essential, plus they are all housed in the high quality packaging that we have come to expect from Mississippi.

Blind Willie Johnson:
The complete works of Blind Willie Johnson (minus alternate takes of two songs) on one album for the first time! The most powerful gospel blues musician of all time growls & moans through 29 amazing songs. Great duets, ballads & rockers. At times tough & at times tender slide guitar playing that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Not for the faint of heart . Beautiful clear transfers heard for the first time on vinyl. A one time pressing not to be missed.

“Last Time Around”
Part three in Mississippi Records series exploring the rawest side of gospel music (Part one being the “Life is a Problem” compilation & part two being the “Oh graveyard, you can’t hold me always” compilation) Moving ballads sit side by side with incredibly rocking crunchy guitar workouts. The recordings span the 1950′s through to the 80′s…but the sound is timeless & consistently soulfull like you won’t believe. Artists include Precious Bryant, Isaiah Owens, The Hickory Bottom Harmoneers, Boyd Rivers, The Straight Street Holiness Group & many more. We are very proud of this one.

Ural Thomas:
The third volume in our “North Portland Music Series”…..two great soul songs by local legend Ural Thomas recorded in 1960. ” Push em, Up” is an upbeat soul stomper for the dance floor. ”Deep Within’ My heart” is a pretty ballad with tight harmonies & lots of groove. Ural is an underappreciated musician who toured opening for Otis Redding back in the day, had James Brown plagarize his style, played in countless bands in Portland & Seattle, built a house out of debris salvaged from the Willamette river, mentored countless kids in the neighborhood, & probably wrestled an alligator or two. Proof that unsung heros live right in our backyard.

Ural Thomas
The fourth volume in our “Norht Portland Music Series”….a most unusual record. Ural recorded this in his house with a bunch of neighborhood kids back in 1970. “Fade Away” is reminicent of the “bad trip’ portion of Sly & The family Stones’ “There’s A Riot Goin’ On”. A lazy funk riff is accompanied by drony vocal incantations & kids blowing into sawed off bed posts as if they were trumpets! It really happened. “Smile” is a more straightforward simple ballad were’in Ural sends a possitive message out to the world. Ural self pressed 300 copies of this way back when just to prove to the kids accompanying him on it that they can do anything they want if they put there minds to it. It’s message rings true today.

Next up is another killer punk reissue from Last Laugh Records in the form of The Embarrassment – Patio Set B/W Sex Drive 7in. Hailing from Wichita, Kansas this is another not to be missed American KBD punk single. Just listen below:

Lastly, among other things, a new LP compilation of Turkish psych guru Erkin Koray came in with a Forced Exposure order this week. This comp of singles and rarities was released on Sublime Frequencies, if you have been following the amazing series of LPs that SF has been putting out, you know that they sell out fast so make sure you come grab one while you can.

There are also tons of used stuff hitting the bins everyday this week everything from punk, 60s rock, jazz and a lot of blues records, so make sure come down and check them out.

Weekend Update

Hey Folks! I am off to the WFMU record fair, but fear not, the store will be open all weekend, and I jam packed it full of great records before I left. Make sure you stop in and visit Ed Steck and Caulen Kress as they tend the store until I get back to town next week.

The only bump in the road is that we will not open until 3pm on Friday, but we will have normal hours all weekend after that.

Weekend Update 10/21/2011

The week is winding down, but we are gearing up at Mind Cure! Stop down this weekend and check out all the used LPs hitting the bins. Lot’s of great fresh stock is getting priced today, just in time for Saturday. A lot of great stuff came in this week which will be going out through the dat today and first thing tomorrow: original LPs from Child, Kevin Ayers, Air, Beggars Opera, jazz, avant-garde and more.

We also got in restocks of Jim Ford’s “Harlan County” and the Stone Coal White LP, so if you missed those last week stop in today and snag them. I have been really into this Jim Ford LP, if you are unfamiliar with his funky-country sound I recommend checking out this track:

Power Pop Madness, Psych-Funk and More… Yup We Got a Numero Order.

A few weeks back we were able to get a few copies of one of the best collections of rare tunes that we have heard in a very long time, the Stone Coal White LP on DJ Shadow’s Cali-Tex imprint. Sadly we were only able to get a couple of scarce copies before they sold out from the label, but they have been repressed and are back in the shop. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the super drugged-out psych-funk that is Stone Coal White, well there’s not a whole lot to tell you. The band made two incredibly rare 45s that are only known to exist in quantities that you can count on two hands or less. These two 45s have been compiled here as well as extra tracks found in the basement of an abandoned motorcycle gang hideout in Dayton, Ohio (I know it’s almost too good of a story). Rather than try to explain Stone Coal White, you should just hear it for yourself:

If that wasn’t enough, Numero has also compiled and unleashed 4Lps of killer power-pop in the form of the “Titan: It’s All Pop” box set. While only releasing eight records between 1978-1981, Titan’s roster is a who’s-who of collectible power-pop singles. Once again, we will let the product speak for itself”

Also in stock are copies of the 3X45 box set of Lil Ed and the Soundmasters. Featuring an 8 year old drummer, these sides of bluesy-funk are a true artifact of Chicago’s South Side. Packaged with tons of liner notes and photos this is another amazing artifact from the curators at Numero.

Due in late Friday is a sizable order from Forced Exposure, so make sure you get over to Mind Cure this weekend to grab up all these amazing records before they are gone. As always there are lots of used records hitting the bins everyday. I just priced a bunch of nice 7ins, so stop down and check those out along with all the great LPs in the bins.

Hidden Twin Empire Art Gallery Pt. 1

Did you ever have a day where you didn’t want to get out of bed and go to work? I was having one of those on this dreary Pittsburgh morning, but then a text message turned my day around – the Hidden Twin “Empire Art Gallery Pt. 1″ EPs where done, and copies were going to be dropped off at the store as soon as I got there.

In case you missed the piece published here a few weeks back on the up and coming Machine Age records, Hidden Twin is the stage and recording moniker of Phil Boyd – also of TM Eye and Modey Lemon fame. This is his latest vinyl offering and it is not to be missed! If you absolutely can’t wait to get your hands on one and just need to get a taste, you can check out Hidden Twin on Soundcloud here. Make sure to stop on down today, pick one up, and shed some sunshine on your day – it has made me go from dragging-ass to toe-tapping in just one listen!

Also in the shop are copies of the essential Disco Zombies “Drums Over London” LP, a few copies of Total Control’s “Henge Beat” LP, Jim Ford “Harlan County” and a lot of really nice used records left over from this weekends record shows.
